"Anxiety & CBT"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services

(as a service user),

It’s said it’s alright not to feel OK, this is true, but what is not right is you not looking for help.  Yes, it is hard to admit that you need it or maybe you don’t even realize it, but if you are anxious to the point you don’t want to see anyone, talk to anyone, leave your house (safe place) then you do not need  a medical person to tell you what’s going on, you know its not right.  So I hit a bump in the road and my “buddy” anxiety came back with a bang, like most people I didn’t want to admit I needed help, again.  But I got in touch with the right people & I have just completed a course of CBT in Sligo with Eugene who is just so good at what he does, as in getting you back on track, giving me the tools to come cope with those waves of anxiety that comes over me, getting rid of the “what if’s”. Etc.,

This is a great service to have in Sligo & while I wouldn’t wish anxiety on anyone at any time, if you need help, ask... if I can do it with the help of Eugene & his colleagues so can you.

Dear Jay,

Thank you for sharing your story and for giving a very honest account of your experience of anxiety. You have highlighted some very important mental health issues and reinforced the message that "it is alright not to feel ok" and also to acknowledge this and "seek help" when necessary. Sometimes it is difficult to take that first step and often people struggle on unnecessarily. I am glad that you had the awareness and realisation that the anxiety was impacting on your life and that you made the decision to get in touch with the Mental Health Services. Anxiety can be crippling and lead to many avoidances of people and situations. As you discovered your home can become the safe place and lead to further isolation and anxiety. CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health problems including anxiety. It aims to teach you the tools and strategies to manage the anxiety more effectively. I am delighted that you found the therapy so helpful and I will share your positive story with Eugene and all of the CBT team. I know that he will appreciate your helpful feedback and for taking the time to share your experiences with others.

Kind regards

Caroline
