"Good clinical experience, administration less good"

About: Tallaght Hospital

(as the patient),

I was referred by my GP for a Heliobacter breath test.

The process of arranging the test was a bit chaotic. There was no information on the hospital website about how appointments and referrals work (it's, to my mind, a rather odd and archaic system). On telephoning to progress it I was met by unanswered phone, curt replies and it seemed like basically seeking to get rid of me asap without dealing with my appointment and irritation that I wouldn't automatically know what the hidden procedure was.

Once I got an appointment I had quite a different and much more positive experience. Seeking directions within the hospital from staff was rewarded with friendly and helpful information. Departmental Reception was efficient and friendly. The waiting area was of quite reasonable standard and with a good amount of space. The test itself was in 2 parts (initial explanation and administering test materials, waiting time and final readings) - the staff clinician was extremely pleasant, friendly and informative. The procedure was outlined in detail for me, any questions well answered and while efficient I didn't feel rushed in any way.

Overall I'd rate my experience as very good despite the issue with booking the appointment.
