"Liscarney House"

About: Sligo Leitrim Psychiatry of Later Life

(as the patient),

I got a good feeling from the moment I entered Liscarney House. I had been very worried about coming and did not know what to expect. There is such a good welcome from all that staff at the hospital, they make you feel at ease and are so helpful.

Every day I have spoken with a nurse, either Francis or Gavin, and they have talked about my feelings and how I am getting on. They have tried to put me at my ease and are good listeners, also the daily talks about depression and how to cope are very helpful.

There is a feeling of calm and caring about Liscarney and I enjoy coming. Even though there are many people coming here, I am made to feel important.

The Drs are very helpful and its been good to have access to them to discuss how the medication is working.

I do worry a bit about how I will be when its time to leave. I am due for CBT, so far I have not heard anything about it.

My husband feels that I have improved since coming, but feels the meds are the most important.  He has been to the house and liked the feel of the place.

I have bipolar and the contact helps to monitor how I am doing with it.

Finally the food is lovely.

Response from Kevin McLaughlin, Psychiatry of Later Life, Sligo Leitrim Mental Health Services

Dear Maryi,

Thank you very much for your feedback on your experience at Liscarney House acute day hospital and I apologize for the delay in responding to your comments. I am pleased to hear that your engagement with the service has been positive and that it has been able to provide the help and support you need at that time you need it most. The combination of talking therapies, social engagement and the use of appropriate medications (the right medicine at the right dose, taken at the right time) can have a very positive outcome for individuals and the role you and your family play in your recovery cannot be underestimated. I am pleased that you felt that you were listened to and that your story was heard and understood. We all need to feel that we are worthy of that. Best wishes for your continued recovery to well health.
