"Scary episode after a bit of exercise!"

About: Sligo General Hospital / Emergency department Sligo General Hospital / Pharmacy Sligo General Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

Following a bike ride at the end of May 2014 I came home feeling fairly exhausted and sat down to look over some paperwork. I was alone in the house but quickly became aware that all was not well and felt nausea along with confusion. Took a low dose aspirin and waited for my wife to return, who quickly took me to GP. Immediately referred to Sligo Regional Hospital for investigation.

I was most impressed by my treatment. Every one of the staff I came into contact with displayed a very caring and professional attitude and kept me informed about what they had to investigate. I, or my wife, were reassured at all times that the purpose of the various tests was to rule out some serious conditions. We were treated with kindness and respect as bloods, x-rays and a brain scan were conducted before I was then allocated a bed for over night observation.

Before I was discharged the next day I was seen by the doctors who had been involved throughout my time in A&E. Follow up tests were arranged and nursing staff ensured that a discharge plan was in place and understood.

I can only add that we were very impressed at the treatment provided and whilst the hospital is showing signs of neglect and there is clearly a shortage of staff, the commitment of this staff was second to none. I also observed patients who were clearly sick being tended to in a compassionate way, but remarked that I did know how the nurses on duty could be expected to cope under such pressure.
