My father who is in his late 70's has had a number of admissions to Tallaght hospital with chest infections. He is a little slow on his feet but well able to walk to the toilet himself.
On his last admission, he slipped in his ensuite bathroom but wasn't injured.
After this, the nurses told him that he shouldn't walk to the toilet and they gave him incontinence pads and a bottle to use instead.
It seems unbelievable that an intelligent fully continent man should be expected to use incontinence pads instead of being at least assisted to walk to the bathroom which was right next to his bed.
Lack of staff cannot be used as an excuse as it was a private ward and extremely well staffed with nurses and health care assistants.
