"Hand Hygiene - "that's the cleaners job""

Recently, I was in Connolly Hospital Emergency Department with a relative. I am very conscious of the need to clean your hands and I went to use the sanitizer just inside the entry doors to the ED. Unfortunately, the sanitizer was empty, so I used another one further inside the ED. On my way out I said to the security guard who looks after visitors attending the ED that it was empty. His response "that's the cleaners job", to which I replied that he could just mention it to the cleaners because it was important that it was filled for hand hygiene. In my opinion if we are to ensure that diseases do not spread then hand hygiene is everyone's business not just the cleaners! Its pointless to ask patients and visitors to be vigilant if staff cant be bothered to be concerned - its just not good enough!
