Our mum was admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital by ambulance due to shortness of breath, which sadly progressed to multi-organ failure. She was transferred to the ICU under the care of Dr. Omar and the dedicated ICU team. During this time, she was under the care of several specialties including cardiology, renal, medical, and haematology.
In ICU, we were told there was little more that could be done, but thankfully the haematology team developed a theory that her illness might be caused by a rare condition called HLH. Their quick thinking and collaboration with the other teams gave our mum the chance to keep fighting.
The care in ICU was outstanding — the nurses were truly dedicated, and the communication with us as a family was exceptional. Every member of staff worked together to try to save her life, and for that, we will always be grateful.
When Mum was moved to Medical 7, she continued to receive excellent care. The nurses, healthcare assistants, OTs, physiotherapists, catering staff, and cleaners all showed her such kindness and respect. Unfortunately, despite everyone’s best efforts, she faced many complications, and her recovery was not possible.
Thanks to the care and dedication of the hospital teams, we were blessed with extra weeks with our mum — precious time that we will always treasure. Our family will be forever grateful to all the staff at Letterkenny University Hospital for their compassion, professionalism, and the incredible care they provided.
