"Ambulance emergency care"

About: National Ambulance Service St Michael's Hospital

(as the patient),

My GP diagnosed a broken bone in my foot recently following a nasty fall and told me to have it x-rayed immediately.  As I normally have all my care in St. Michael's Hospital Dun Laoghaire there didn't appear to be any reason why I couldn't have the x-ray there.  The taxi rate from Wicklow to Dun Laoghaire is normally 75 Euros each way and I am a senior citizen so I rang 112 for to be taken to the hospital.  The woman who answered the emergency call was very rude and abrasive.

I explained that I needed to go to St. Michael's for xrays to which she replied -You will go where we take you and  it is not  up to you.  When I asked her where they were taking me she couldn't tell me.  Her rudeness was a surprise as I expected the emergency services to treat older people with respect and politeness.

Sadly that was not to be so I paid for a taxi instead.  People on emergency phone lines should be taught manners and respect for the injured who are in shock after an accident happens.  I had a similar experience some years ago when I rang the local Care Doc.  The lack of manners and respect for an injured pensioner was a disgrace.  I felt bad enough with my injuries without bad manners thrown in for good measure.  Care Doc left me lying on the floor for 3 days as according to them they were too busy to treat me.  I found out when I eventually got to hospital that I had bilateral pelvic bone breaks and three broken disks in my back.  I was left without help of any kind for 3 days as it was a bank holiday week end.  Disgraceful service all round.
