"ADHD & Autism diagnosis"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services / Family Connections

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with ADHD, where I was told I was unsuitable for medication due to issues regarding my weight (2022-2023). I've consistently been in contact with my doctor's since addressing issues with my weight. Only to find recently my diagnosis sheet states that I opted out of medication which was not the case. Since finding this my doctors have been in contact to get approval to start the necessary medication.

They were met with blatant laziness and a severe lack of care with the appalling response from the ADHD service dealing with it stating that I suppose you could start her on some sort of stimulant. This has been an exhausting rollercoaster go get ADHD meds and to be met with this response was extremely defeating and dehumanising as a 'patient' in their care. All of this is not to mention that I was also told -you probably have autism however will require a reassessment..

This assessment never came. I am extremely disappointed and have been majorly let down in regards to care. I've had an extremely difficult time working and finding suitable work. With NO supports from the service concerned. I was given no supports upon diagnosis and simply never heard back again. Truly appalling extremely and I still have no supports nor management for my ADHD.

I meet with service users and sometimes with their families. I assess psychological problems and provide psychological interventions in an effort to help service users overcome their difficulties.

Dear Mieralph65,

On behalf of the mental health services in Sligo/Leitrim, I am truly sorry to read about your negative experiences and how you feel so let down regarding your care. I am also concerned that you do not feel you have been given support for the management of your ADHD and would really appreciate if you would consider contacting me in confidence so that I can help to better understand the care you have received and ensure your concerns are addressed. I would really like to be able to explore what specific support and help can be provided where you can have confidence in the care you receive going forward.

Receiving feedback about service users’ experience such as yours is really important, so that we can know when we are getting things wrong and for us to be able to make improvements to our services.

I hope you will feel at ease to contact me to speak to me in confidence about your experiences.

I can be contacted at this email
