"Dangerous situation for 91 year old"

About: Cavan General Hospital Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital / Accident & Emergency Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

My elderly mother in her 90's was transferred to Drogheda hospital with suspected infected fluid in arthritic knee. She was placed on a trolley and ended up in a staff classroom or kitchen with no bell, water, pain relief or any of her medication. No one could hear her calling and she could not get off trolley due to knee injury.

She was forced to urinate 3 times where she lay. A doctor examined her at midnight but she did not see a nurse until 4:15am who said she didn’t know where she was.

My mother was in excruciating pain and asked for even paracetamol but it was not administered until she was in the ambulance being transferred back to Cavan general.

This was during a storm during which a tree fell in the ambulance. I had begged them to let her rest and not transfer til she had some sleep and food plus pain relief. On arrival to cavan general we were told that she should not have been transferred as lab results stated she had infection. So once again she is in an ambulance on an awful road in pain, exhausted and no doubt motion sick and to have to go through the whole ordeal if a&e again.

This is a disgrace. Shame on the nursing staff in a&e Drogheda and why oh why has Cavan general not got an orthopaedic doctor
