"Helpful service at Liscarney House."

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services / Sligo Leitrim Psychiatry of Later Life

(as a service user),

I am in my early 70ies.  In 2021 I began to feel lonely and suicidal but I went to my GP and he sent me to Liscarney House in Sligo.  They listened to my story and I attended their talks on menal health and I found them very helpful and I am on a tablet for depression.

In Liscarney House the staff could not be more helpful.  I owe a lot to them.

Dear Helpedinsligo,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences of your engagement with Liscarney Acute Mental Health Day Hospital and I am delighted you found the support you received helpful at a time when you needed help most.

Coping with the symptoms of depression and having thoughts of suicide can be extremely distressing and I'm glad that you were able to discuss how you were feeling with your own GP, who referred you to our service. The use of antidepressant medication in conjunction with "talking therapies" and psychological support has helped many individuals experiencing just what you have described. Sometimes knowing that others have "been in the same boat at you and got through it" can be helpful. Sometimes knowing that people care can be helpful too. Sometimes having people who understand and to talk too makes a difference as well. The importance of being connected to others cannot be overstated either.

I hope you are feeling more hopeful about the future and more resilient in yourself. The therapeutic groups help build confidence and help individuals to actively participate in their own recovery by giving you skills to use and strategies to help you cope better. The peer support that groups provide is invaluable.

The team at Liscarney House are made up of skilled practitioners from a number of different professions (medicine, occupational therapy, nursing, social work) and will help you along your recovery journey.

Stay well. Be confident in your own abilities and about the future and thank you once again for your feedback.

Best wishes for the future,

Kevin McLaughlin
