"Noise on pediatric ward."

About: Sligo General Hospital

(as a service user),

My son was admitted to hospital with vomiting which lasted a number of days. As a result he was admitted to the peads unit in Sligo University Hospital. The staff and doctors were as always very professional and helpful. The problem for both patients, parents and staff is the noise from construction workers. There is a new unit being built on top of the peads unit and the construction is to last for several months. We were issued with ear protectors to reduce the impact of the noise. From a parents perspective this is a very serious issue. Sick children require a environment where they can sleep and recover. Currently this is not the case on the unit. The noise starts after 8am and continues until 5pm. Alternative arrangements need to be considered and implemented for the safety of the children who attend. Both patients and patients have no choice but to be in hospital and it should be a place that will aid recovery not prolong it. Vulnerable childrens health should not be put at risk due to hospital developments and the cost for a alternative plan should not be put ahead of our children's health.
