"My experience of Liscarney House"

(as a service user),

I have been attending Liscarney House Sligo since Nov 2020.  I found the staff to be extremely accommodating, understanding and sympathetic.  They were very professional both in asking questions and allowing me to answer as it was an extremely difficult time for me to find myself requiring their services for the first time.  I myself felt a stigma was still attached to mental health but as the months passed under their care, I came to realise its like any other health problem.

They have a wide range of services there from light gardening, occupational therapy, CBT for anyone who wishes to avail themselves.   A place also to chat over a cuppa and meet other users and staff.  They were understanding of problems with some medications and would change them until a suitable one was found.  They would also change the dosage up or down as required.

They have an excellent public health service. The nurse calls to my house and does even though thank God I am in a much better place.  It is a great way to get to know each other. The team would also keep in touch by phone alongside my visits to Liscarney. They provided phone nos for support outside their opening hours. They also include your partner and family if you wish.  I am still attending but much less now and a with a view to weaning off my medication.

I cannot think of any improvements-they have been doing an excellent job even with pandemic restrictions.

Dear Grateful User,

thank you for taking the time to share your experience of your engagement with Sligo, Leitrim Mental Health Service for later life and in particular your participation in the acute day hospital at Liscarney House. I am glad that you felt you received the support you required at a moment in time when you needed it most. The multidisciplinary team offers an holistic approach to care and recovery and whilst medications play an important role, the behavioural, psychological and psychosocial care approaches play a significant part in facilitating recovery, building confidence, reducing stigma and promoting your central role in returning to, and maintaining, well health. Peer support and the sharing our experiences allows us to connect with others and gives us the opportunity to learn and gain perspective, as well potentially helping others.

Liscarney House acute day hospital staff work closely with the wider Community Mental Health Team and the shared approach of home based and day hospital based care has proved very beneficial to those individuals (and their families) that require more intensive interventions. Thanks again for your comments and I wish you every success on your recovery journey.

Best wishes,

Kevin
