"Eolas Psycho-Educational Programme"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services

(as a parent/guardian),

It is with regret that I finished my course, I have never heard of it and when I received news of the course starting in Sligo, we were more than delighted to accept.

I have met wonderful people who knew what it was like to have a son with mental health issues. I did not know how to cope. I learned so much about his illness, I felt I had let him down so much.

The facilitator - Regina - helped me so much also the great speakers. I now know who to approach when I am looking for help. I am grateful for the help and understanding.

For the past 20 years we have tried to cope with our son's illness - our family eldest son and daughter were so helpful to us. But the problem was still there.

Our Son went missing on numerous occasions but thankfully now he is having treatment.

The Eolas group were very helpful & helped me to share.

I meet with service users and sometimes with their families. I assess psychological problems and provide psychological interventions in an effort to help service users overcome their difficulties.

I have sent your feedback to Regina our local Eolas coordinator who you refer to in your story. We really appreciate hearing the experiences of people who attend groups such as Eolas and its great that it has been of help to you and your family.

It is good to hear that your son is doing well,

Regina will no doubt be in touch to acknowledge your feedback through Care Opinion.

Thank you again,

Dear Eolas Family Member,

Thank you for taking the time to highlight your experience of attending the 8 Week Psycho-educational Family Members programme which was held in Sligo from February - April 2019. It is always good to get positive feedback as we strive to continue to make this programme available for Family Members/Close Friends of Service Users directly impacted by their loves one illness. The programme is centred around education and support for those who maybe struggling to support themselves and their loved one through such illnesses like Schizophrenia, Psychosis or Bipolar Disorder. Thank you for the acknowledgment of the support you received from the clinical facilitators but also the family members who co-deliver the programme with us. To date the feedback has really demonstrated that families appreciate the imput from the family member facilitator who has the "lived experience". The guest speakers ranged from the Consultant Psychiatrists, Mental Health Pharmacist and the lived experiences of one of our Service Users.

We have managed to provide this 8 Week evidenced based programme in the Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan/South Donegal Mental Health Services since late 2015. To date we have ran the 8 weeks in the Spring & Autumn. In addition there is an 8 Week Eolas Service Users Programme which tends to be available in the Spring & Autumn. Service Users & Families/Close friends can get referred through a member of their local community mental health team. We are hoping to run both programmes again this Autumn 2019 so if you are aware of any other family members please tell them to request a referral through a community mental health team member or contact Regina McNamee, Local Eolas Cordinator, 086-4634907.

I am glad to hear that you felt supported by attending the programme and I would like to wish you well with your son's recovery journey.

Kind Regards,

Regina McNamee

(Adult Mental Health Social Worker)
