"Genuine support and understanding"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services

(as a service user),

Having been admitted to hospital for mental health issues, it was recommended that DBT would likely be the therapy that would benefit me the most. I was uncertain about the therapy at first but now having completed the full year of DBT I am a much happier and healthier person. I learned a lot through DBT and I think that many more people should have the opportunity to partake in it.

DBT is the most beneficial thing I have ever done. It truly was a live saver. Also the support and professionalism by the DBT facilitators was amazing. Their genuine support and understanding made the whole process even more successful.

It is quite unfortunate that the waiting list for people hoping to do DBT is so long. I think that the sooner people can begin it the better they will benefit.

Dear WBA,

Thank you so much for your feedback with regard to your experience attending Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. It is wonderful to hear that you have made such positive changes in your life and that you feel happier and healthier because of this. We are always delighted to hear of clients having a positive experience of DBT and continuing to use skills after therapy.

You are right the waitlist for DBT is quite long. As you know the core intervention is 12 months of intensive group and individual work and clients also complete 5/6 sessions of pre-treatment and 4 sessions after they complete the group. In total this can add up to 18 months of work with each client to achieve the outcomes you have described. Unfortunately, this means that we have a long wait-list. We will however listen to your feedback and discuss as a therapy team what more we can offer people on the waiting list. It may be the case that we can communicate better with people on the waiting list and provide them with some more information about DBT, which may help them prepare for therapy when a therapist becomes available.

Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you all the best for the future.

Patrick Finan

On behalf of the DBT team.
