"The care and treatment I received whilst attending CBT in Sligo"

About: Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services / Leitrim Adult Community Mental Health Services Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services / Sligo Adult Community Mental Health Services

(as the patient),

I arrived for my first appointment shrivelled up, a mere speck of my former self. I had spent 6 years searching for the help I needed and had come to the end of my tether, I had given up. I no longer had the strength to search further and was hoping that perhaps The Lord could see how tired I was and see fit to call me home.

Then I met Caroline for CBT and I learned there is a cure for this. It even had a name "PTSD".

Little by sometimes very little but always with encouragement, empathy, explanation that I could understand, a light started to shine.

After 10 weeks of CBT, I was deemed suitable for a "mindfulness" 8 week course to be HSE funded and given by Dr. Martin and Andrea.

I have no words that could expound the virtues of having the opportunity to be receiving CBT and Mindfulness together. Dichotomies of each other, I felt something lift, I felt joy and excitement again for the first time in years.

Thank you HSE for providing these therapies for me. I so so so so hope that they both are available to one and all who are experiencing "Invisible Illness"

I know that without them, I certainly would not be able to write this as only my former self could do that.

Dear Sandalpohn,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience attending CBT and the MBCT group in the Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Service. It's really great to hear stories like this and to be able to let staff know they are doing a good job.

Just to mention for people reading this that are not familiar with the therapies, Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help people manage their problems by changing the way they think and behave. It is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, including PTSD.

The MBCT group mentioned was based on “Mindfulness”, which is an awareness practice that helps people to live more fully in the present moment. Evidence shows that practicing mindfulness regularly benefits both body and mind, promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

As you know the Adult Community Mental Health Service can offer these therapies, where appropriate and available, as part of a person’s Mental Health Care Plan. These therapies are also available independently to people who are not attending the mental health service, but who feel they might benefit from them.

Great to hear you had such a positive experience and may I wish you well in your continued recovery.

Thanks again,

Martin.
