"Infectious Disease Care at the Mater Public"

Some time ago I had a very frightening experience awaking in the Mater ICU following infection by an infectious disease. While I experienced staff from many wards and specialties, (consultants, nurses, neurology, phlebotomy, radiology, speech and language, physiotherapy as well as porters and healthcare assistants) I can genuinely say by and large they are all very passionate about what they do. Having had time to reflect on this time I know I would not be alive today were it not for these people and their care for me. I spent over 3 months in hospital learning to speak, eat move and walk again and for this I am very grateful to you all. During my stay I was in A&E, ICU, HDU, Special Care and ultimately St Bernard's ward. Nowhere on this journey did I feel I could not ask a staff member for help and all did all they could to make me as comfortable as possible. St Bernard's ward and the staff there are without question the kindest most understanding people I have ever met in a healthcare setting.

To this day I continue to visit the Mater out patients clinic which is now located in the new building. This facility is fantastic in comparison to what was there previously. Prior to the opening of this facility the infectious diseases clinic (which covers everything from Swine Flu to HIV and much more in between) was hosted in what could only be viewed as a second class facility. Now thankfully this is no more and we are all integrated into a new outpatient facility in the new building. Well done to all who fought to get this established, it is a credit to you all and one you should be very proud of.

To my consultant and his team I thank you for saving my life and giving me back my future, I thank you for continuing to care for me and treating me a person not a walking disease but most of all I thank you for helping and listening to me. There are of course areas of the services that could continue to improve (timed appointments, communication with junior staff and handovers) however I know you are committed to improving these as you progress.
